Dentro de WikiLeaks se viven días turbulentos. Por lo menos seis personas del staff han renunciado debido a que Julian Assange programó, sin consultar con nadie, la publicación de 392 mil documentos clasificados de Estados Unidos en la guerra de Irak. Julian dio como fecha de salida el 18 de octubre, demasiado pronto como para cubrir apropiadamente todos los nombres de los involucrados.
Muchos miembros importantes de WikiLeaks ya estaban molestos porque Assange decidió unilateralmente dar acceso controlado a varios medios de comunicación a su base de datos. Por esta razón, por lo menos seis integrantes del staff entregaron sus renuncias en las últimas semanas. El más importante fue Daniel Schmitt, quien fungió como el vocero alemán de WikiLeaks.
La confrontación con Assange ocurrió cuando Schmitt le preguntó por chat cuáles eran los detalles de la publicación de octubre. Julian respondió agresivamente, acusando directamente a Daniel de filtrar información sobre el descontento dentro de WikiLeaks a un columnista de Newsweek La pelea terminó con Assange supendiendo un mes a Schmitt, lo que provocó su renuncia días después. >Schmitt: i didnt speak to newsweek or other media representatives about this [...] i spoke to people we work with and that have an interest in and care about this project [...] and there is nothing wrong about this [...] it’d actually be needed much more, and i can still only recommend you to finally start listening to such concerns [...] face the fact that you have not much trust on the inside anymore [...] and that just denying it or putting it away as a campaign against you will not change that it is solely a consequence of your actions

>Assange: You are suspended for one month, effective immediately.
A la renuncia de Schmitt le siguieron otros integrantes de WikiLeaks inconformes con el carácter de Assange. La preocupación del staff es que, con tan poco tiempo para redactar los documentos, no se puedan cubrir todos los nombres de los informantes. En julio, cuando la organización filtró 92 mil documentos de la guerra en Afganistán, salieron a la luz el nombre de algunos de los soplones afganos, lo que provocó críticas por parte de organizaciones en defensa de los derechos humanos, incluyendo a Reporteros sin Fronteras.
La investigación por violación sexual contra Assange también ha levantado ámpula dentro de la oficina de WikiLeaks. La reacción de Julian, argumentando que todo forma parte de un complot en su contra, ha causado molestia entre el staff, quienes aseguran que Assange debería tomar un rol menos público. Parece que la tormenta no se irá rápido, ya que la ruptura es evidente. ¿Será que el mal genio de su líder terminará por detener a una de las grandes iniciativas en libertad de información?
